To Muse or Be Amused?

Once upon a time, I used to have a life. I would read for hours, write whenever I felt inspired, and spend quality time with my loved ones. I was proud to say that my life did not revolve around television shows.

That was before DVR came along. Now, I can’t seem to get away from its seductive call: “Watch me. You know you want to. Come on…just one little show.” One little show turns into four little shows, and before you know it, two hours have gone by.

The possibilities are endless now. So I can’t make it home in time for LOST tonight? No problem, just DVR it. Oh no! Did I forget to DVR Grey’s Anatomy? No worries, I’ll just call my husband to set it up through his iPhone.

It’s gotten so ridiculous that even if I’m home in time to watch the show, I’ll start recording it, and then wait a half hour, just so I can skip the commercials.

I fear the loss of my creative soul. As I write this, I fight the urge to turn on the television. I know that they’re there, just waiting for me. It’s so easy to allow your mind to go blank for a while and let this device entertain you instead of worrying about how to entertain yourself, especially after a hard day’s work. It’s just so convenient!

Inevitably, what I do with my free time is up to me, of course. It’s all about choices, but unfortunately, it’s getting harder for me to choose my muse over picking up the remote control and being amused.

  1. What can I say? Television has certainly gotten the best of me. As I read your blog today, I was laying down on the couch watching tv and checking facebook, simultaneously! I mean, did they both need my attention?? NO! Technology has made it really difficult to focus on anything else and it's truly absorbing...Now I understand why mom would hide our television when I growing up... I won't ever forget one night after she had tucked me into bed that I returned back to my room and I saw her rolling a television back into a closet... I didn't understand then but now it makes perfect sense...she was protecting me. I too feel like I lose valuable time out of my life for something that gives nothing in return. So thanks again for creating the awareness. You are right, we all have a choice and I know I'm smarter than that! Thanks CINDY, great blog!

PS LOST is the one show I don't regret losing an hour to every week! CAN YOU BELIEVE LAST NIGHT!!!!!!!!! WOWOWOWOOWOW!

  2. Yes, I totally agree that we have become a society of multitaskers. I also watch tv while checking facebook. And twitter. And my blogs on this and another website. It's crazy. Our minds aren't satisfied until we are doing more than two things at once. We can't focus on just one thing anymore. It looks like we really are becoming like the Thoroughly Thoughtless. (I don't know if you saw the blog on here with that title.)

  3. Before I came on here I checked both e-mail addresses, my blog, facebook and twitter. Then I gave a glance to my DVR and I realize I'm three weeks behind every show (except LOST). Why? I got too busy with other things. That DVR is calling my name, "Don't you want to know what Jack Bauer is up to?? Hmmm!!" Plus I can totally relate to skipping commercials. I was home to watch Desperate Housewives last Sunday but I waited until it was 30 minutes in before I started watching. The DVR has totally spoiled me!
